Which diagnostic tool do you actually need?

Diagnostic gear ranges from a €35 plug-in to a €400 bench programmer, and most people buy the wrong one. This is the plain-English version: what each type does, and how to pick by your car and your budget in two minutes.

First: what OBD2 even is

OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics II) is the 16-pin port under almost every dashboard since ~2001 for petrol and ~2004 for diesel. When a warning light comes on, the car stores a fault code in one of its computers. A scanner plugs into that port, reads the code, and — depending on how capable it is — reads live sensor data, runs tests, and clears the light.

The difference between a €35 tool and a €350 tool isn't the plug. It's how many of the car's computers it can talk to, and how deep the conversation goes.

The four tiers, and who each is for

1 — Code readers & app dongles (from €33)

Plug in, read and clear engine fault codes, see basic live data. Some are handhelds with a screen; some are Bluetooth dongles that pair with a phone app. Perfect for a DIY driver who wants to know why the check-engine light is on before spending money at a garage.

2 — Full-system scanners (from €75)

These reach every module — engine, ABS, airbag/SRS, transmission, body — and perform service functions like oil, EPB (electronic parking brake) and SAS (steering angle) resets. Most are app-based or a standalone tablet. This is the sweet spot for an enthusiast who works on the whole car, not just the engine.

3 — Brand interfaces (from €45)

A cable or dongle plus software built for one marque, talking to it the way the main dealer's bench does — coding, hidden-feature activation, module programming. If you own a BMW, VW, Ford or Renault and want to go deep on that car specifically, this beats a generic tool.

4 — Cluster & EEPROM repair (from €19)

Bench tools for the workshop: fixing dashboards, not just reading them. Stepper-motor kits for gauge needles that stick, LCD ribbon kits for missing pixels, and EEPROM/chip programmers (XPROG, Orange5, CG100) for cluster repair after a replacement, airbag/SRS reset and module memory work. This is professional repair territory.

Questions people actually ask

Will any scanner work on my car?

Do I need a laptop?

Code reader vs full-system — is the jump worth it?
If you only ever clear engine lights, no. The moment you want ABS, airbag, transmission or service resets (oil, EPB, SAS), a basic reader simply can't see those modules — that's the line where full-system pays for itself.
