What J2534 actually is
J2534 is an SAE standard for a diagnostic interface. Before it existed, every manufacturer's programming needed that manufacturer's own dedicated box. J2534 changed that: one compliant interface can work with many manufacturers' software, because they all talk to it the same standard way.
The device passes commands through between the OEM application running on your Windows PC and the car's modules. That's the whole idea: the intelligence is in the manufacturer's software; the J2534 box is the bridge.
What it's for
- Module reprogramming (flashing). Update or reinstall the software in a control module, for a recall, a fix, or after replacing a module. This is the headline use.
- Guided diagnostics. Run the manufacturer's own diagnostic trees, which go deeper than a generic scanner.
- Coding and adaptations that the OEM software exposes.
What you can do depends entirely on the software, not the interface. The same box does very different things with different manufacturers' applications.

They're not competitors. Most people who own a J2534 device also own a scanner for quick jobs.

The golden rule: pick the interface for the software you'll run, and check that software's supported-device list first. A device that's perfect for one manufacturer's application may not be certified for another's.
What it won't do
- Nothing without software. No OEM application, no OEM-level function.
- Not a magic universal tool. Coverage and depth come from each manufacturer's software, and each is licensed separately.
- Windows required. The OEM applications are Windows programs.
- Security-gated functions may still need online authorisation from the manufacturer.
